About

The Sphynx, arguably the most well-known of the world’s hairless cat breeds, originated in Canada and was named after the Ancient Egyptian Sphinx due to a perceived resemblance. This breed’s hairlessness is the result of a natural mutation, with its development traced back to a hairless male kitten born in Ontario in 1966 to a short-haired farm cat. Further hairless kittens appearing in subsequent years contributed to the foundation of the breed. Despite the usual association of hairlessness with other mutations, outcrossing with Devon Rex and Cornish Rex cats helped ensure that the Sphynx remains relatively free of genetic issues. Contrary to its name, this cat is not entirely bald—it often has a fine, suede-like fuzz covering its body, along with sparse hair on its head, tail, and paws. Featuring oversized ears, wrinkled skin, and a rounded belly, the Sphynx’s extraordinary appearance may not appeal to everyone, but its affectionate and sociable temperament has won it many admirers. Lacking a conventional coat, these cats require regular bathing to manage excess skin oils. They are best suited for indoor living, as they need protection from extreme temperatures.
