Named after the Selkirk Mountains in Montana, the Selkirk Rex breed was established in the late 1980s. It began when a curly-coated kitten unexpectedly appeared among a litter of otherwise straight-haired kittens born to a feral cat at an animal rescue center. This kitten became the foundation of the Selkirk Rex breed. Deliberate breed development led to the creation of both the Selkirk Rex shorthair and a long-haired variety, achieved through selective matings with pedigree cats such as Persians. Straight-coated kittens frequently appear in litters of both coat types. The dense, plush coat of the Selkirk Rex forms into random curls or waves, rather than the neatly aligned curls seen in some other rex breeds. The highest degree of curl is typically found around the neck and belly, and the whiskers are sparse, curly, and prone to breaking. While grooming is not difficult, a gentle approach is recommended to avoid flattening the coat. Known for its affectionate and tolerant nature, this breed remains playful well into adulthood and thrives on interaction.
