The Scottish Fold, distinguished by its unique forward-folding ears that give its head a rounded look, originated from a genetic mutation. The breed traces back to the 1960s when an all-white, long-haired female named Susie was discovered on a Scottish farm. Initially, only local interest surrounded these folded-ear cats, but eventually, geneticists became involved, and some of Susie’s descendants were sent to the US. Here, the breed was further developed using British and American Shorthairs. During this process, a long-haired variety also emerged. Breeding requires care, as the gene responsible for the fold is linked to potential skeletal issues, which is why not all organizations recognize the breed. Kittens are always born with straight ears, with those carrying the fold gene developing their distinctive look within three weeks. Straight-eared kittens, known as Scottish Straights, are also part of the breed. Though rare and primarily seen at cat shows, Scottish Folds are known for their affectionate and adaptable nature, making them ideal family pets.
