Recognized as a distinct breed in the US since the 1970s, this cat boasts a strikingly colored coat that ranges from rich apricot to golden hues, which are widely admired. However, when Golden Persians first emerged in the 1920s in litters born to Chinchillas (see opposite), they were initially dismissed as undesirable within the pedigree cat world. Known at the time as "brownies," they were excluded from competitions but still made charming pets. Over time, breeders recognized their potential and worked to refine this exquisite Persian variety.
