The illustrated manuscript The Cat Book Poems, which may date back to the old kingdom of Siam (Thailand), suggests that Oriental cats with tortie (tortoiseshell) patterns have a long-established history. The modern Oriental Tortie began its development in the 1960s through matings between solid-colored Orientals and Siamese cats with red, tortie, or cream points. Official breed recognition followed in the 1980s. Depending on the base color, the Tortie coat consists of various ground colors mixed with contrasting patches of red, cream, or both. Because tortoiseshell genes are distributed in a particular way, nearly all torties are female, while the rare males that do exist are usually sterile.
