About

As solid-colored Oriental Shorthairs gained popularity, breeders shifted their focus to developing a line of Oriental tabbies. In their initial efforts to introduce the tabby pattern to Orientals, they crossed non-pedigree tabbies with Siamese cats. The first officially recognized patterned Oriental, appearing in 1978, was a modern recreation of the Siamese-type spotted tabbies believed to be ancestors of today’s domestic cats. By the 1980s, Orientals featuring ticked, mackerel, and classic tabby patterns in various colors had emerged. Among the later additions to this color palette was the patched-tabby Oriental, typically displaying patches of red or cream.
