In 1971, a cross between a red-point Siamese and a shaded silver hybrid cat produced a litter with mixed coat colors. Among them, one kitten exhibited the coat pattern known as smoke, which intrigued breeders and led to the development of a new Oriental variety. Each hair of a Smoke cat's coat has two color bands—the top layer may be a solid color, such as black, chocolate, blue, or red, or it may be tortoiseshell, while the lower portion of the hair is pale or white for at least one-third of its length. This paler base creates a striking effect, becoming especially noticeable when the cat moves.
