An accidental mating between a Persian Chinchilla and a chocolate-point Siamese produced a litter that included two kittens with shaded silver coats. This piqued the interest of breeders, sparking a gradual effort to create a new range of Oriental cats. In a shaded Oriental, the coat essentially consists of a modified tabby pattern, where the darker markings appear only at the tips of the hairs. These markings—whether ticked, mackerel, classic, or spotted tabby—may be distinct in kittens, but as the cat matures, they fade, sometimes becoming nearly invisible.
