First bred in Louisiana, the Munchkin remains a relatively new breed and is available in both shorthaired and longhaired varieties. While it is growing in popularity, many international breed organizations have yet to grant it official recognition. The Munchkin’s notably short legs, which stem from a random genetic mutation, do not seem to affect either its speed or longevity. Though lacking the jumping ability of longer-legged cats, the Munchkin is still active, playful, and capable of climbing furniture. It has also been used in the development of other short-legged breeds, such as the Minskin.
