During the 1980s, two breeders in New Zealand separately discovered that accidental pairings between Burmese cats and domestic cats resulted in promising kittens. From these litters, both breeders developed what is now known as the Mandalay, a cat with the same breed standard as the Burmese but in a broader range of coat colors. With its sleek, glossy fur and golden eyes, this stunning cat is best recognized in its native country. The Mandalay is highly active and alert, with a muscular, lithe frame. Affectionate toward its family, it tends to be wary of strangers.
