About

Recognized as America’s native feline, the Maine Coon is named after the state where it first gained popularity. Its origins are shrouded in folklore, with some stories suggesting it descends from Scandinavian cats brought by Viking explorers, while others claim Marie Antoinette sent several to the US in an effort to save her pets before the French Revolution. The idea that Maine Coons are a hybrid of domestic cats and raccoons is scientifically impossible, though their bushy tails may have inspired the myth. This large and rugged breed has a dense, waterproof coat that once served it well as a farm cat, surviving harsh New England winters. Historically valued for its hunting abilities, the Maine Coon became a sought-after pet in the mid-20th century. Despite its size, this cat is playful and kitten-like throughout its life. Its chirping vocalizations seem surprisingly soft for such a large breed. Maine Coons mature slowly, reaching their full size around five years of age.
