Few cat breeds are truly of ancient origin, but the Korat from Thailand is one of them. It is mentioned in a book titled The Cat Book Poems, dating back to the Ayudhya period (1350–1767) in what was then Siam. Highly valued in its homeland as a good luck symbol, the Korat was nearly unknown in the West until the mid-20th century when a breeding pair was sent to the US. This graceful, silvery-blue cat makes a unique pet. Although usually highly active, the Korat also has its tranquil moments and is affectionate and gentle with its owners. With its heightened senses, it can be startled easily by loud sounds or sudden movements.
