A tortoiseshell (tortie) coat is made up of two colors that blend softly together. While there are many variations, the most common is black mixed with red—the first tortie color developed in British Shorthairs. Another older variety, recognized since the 1950s, is the blue-cream tortoiseshell, where black is replaced by blue and red by cream. In the Calico (referred to as Tortie and White in the UK), the colors are distinctly separated into patches. Due to genetics, torties are almost always female, with the rare male being sterile.
