In a tipped cat, a pale undercoat is covered with what seems like a light dusting of color. This effect is created by the top hairs being colored at their ends to about one-eighth of their length. The Tipped British Shorthair—once called the Chinchilla Shorthair—comes in different color varieties, including silver (a white undercoat with black tipping), golden (a warm golden or apricot undercoat with black tipping), and the uncommon Shell Cameo (a white undercoat with red tipping), known as red in the UK.
