Shorthairs
Weight : Weight- 9–18lb (4–8kg)
Initially bred from the finest examples of British domestic cats, the British Shorthair became one of the first pedigree breeds showcased in cat shows during the late 19th century. However, in subsequent decades, the breed was nearly overshadowed by longhaired cats, particularly Persians. Surviving by a narrow margin, the British Shorthair experienced a resurgence from the mid-20th century onward. Descended from working cats that controlled vermin on farms and homesteads, this breed is now considered the ultimate fireside companion. It is especially popular in Europe and is steadily gaining recognition in the US, where it remains relatively lesser known. Decades of selective breeding have resulted in a well-proportioned, high-quality cat. Solidly built, the British Shorthair has a medium-to-large, compact body with sturdy legs. Its broad, round head, full cheeks, and large, expressive eyes are signature traits. The dense, short coat appears in a variety of colors and has a deep pile with a firm texture. This breed’s temperament is as calm and friendly as its plump-cheeked, serene expression suggests. Equally suited to town and country life, the British Shorthair is neither overly energetic nor hyperactive, preferring to keep all four paws firmly on the ground. It is content to stay indoors, happily lounging on furniture, but also enjoys outdoor activities, making use of the hunting instincts inherited from its ancestors. Quietly affectionate, this breed enjoys being near its owner while maintaining a sense of independence. While observant of household activity, it does not demand constant attention. British Shorthairs are known for their overall good health and longevity. Their thick coats require minimal grooming, with occasional combing sufficient to maintain their condition.
