The Smoke British Shorthair may appear to be a solid color at first glance, but movement or parting of the fur reveals a narrow silver band at the base of each hair. This effect is created by the silver gene, which inhibits color development in the coat. British Shorthair Smokes inherited this feature from their silver tabby ancestors. The effect is even more subtly striking in the tortoiseshell variation, where two distinct colors blend within the topcoat.
