About

In the 1970s, scientists attempted to transfer the wild Asian leopard cat’s natural resistance to feline leukemia to domestic cats by crossbreeding. Though the project failed, the hybrids it produced caught the attention of American breeders. Through selective breeding with various pedigree domestic cats—including the Abyssinian, Bombay, British Shorthair, and Egyptian Mau—the Bengal, originally called the Leopardette, was established and officially recognized in the 1980s. Boasting a muscular frame and a magnificently patterned coat, the Bengal brings a touch of the jungle into the home. Despite its wild heritage, it is an affectionate cat. However, with its high energy levels, it is best suited to experienced owners. Bengals thrive on companionship, mental stimulation, and physical activity. If left bored, they may become unhappy or destructive.
