About

There are different stories about the Abyssinian’s history, including the appealing yet unlikely claim that it descends from Ancient Egypt’s sacred cats. A more reasonable theory suggests that its ancestors were brought back from Abyssinia (modern-day Ethiopia) by British soldiers at the end of the Abyssinian War in the 1860s. What is known is that the breed was refined in the UK, probably by crossing the British Shorthair with an exotic, possibly imported, cat. With its athletic physique, regal stance, and striking ticked coat, the Abyssinian has a touch of the wild. Intelligent and affectionate, these cats make excellent companions but thrive in an active environment.
